Cleaning Exterior Drains and Gullies

Blocked exterior drains cause flooding and damage. Here's what's involved in clearing and cleaning them.

Exterior drains and gullies collect surface water run-off from driveways, patios, and paths. Over time they accumulate silt, leaves, moss, and general debris, reducing their capacity to drain water quickly. When drains are slow or blocked, surface water pools on driveways and paths after rain, causing safety hazards, surface damage, and potential flooding of garages or lower areas.

Gully pots — the underground chambers beneath drain grilles — are the most common point of blockage. They can be cleaned by lifting the grille, removing accumulated silt and debris by hand, and flushing through with water to confirm free flow. The surrounding drain channel and grille are cleaned using pressure washing to remove algae and accumulated dirt. This work is best combined with a driveway or patio clean.

Linear drainage channels — the long, slot drains increasingly used across block paving driveways — need periodic cleaning too. The channel interior fills with grit and debris that limits flow. Cleaning involves lifting the channel sections, removing debris, and flushing through. If you're experiencing slow drainage on a recently cleaned driveway, the drainage channel may be the source of the problem rather than any surface issue.
