Cleaning Steps and External Staircases Safely

External steps become dangerous when algae takes hold. Here's how professional cleaning makes them safe again.

External steps are one of the most safety-critical surfaces to keep clean. A step covered with algae or moss is far more dangerous than a flat path — the combination of the slip hazard and the potential for a fall from height makes cleaning steps a genuine safety priority, not just a cosmetic one. This is particularly important for properties with elderly residents or young children.

Steps come in a variety of materials — concrete, natural stone, brick, and composite — and each requires the appropriate pressure and cleaning method. Natural stone steps such as sandstone or limestone need lower pressure to avoid erosion or damage to the surface texture. Concrete steps can tolerate more pressure but still require care around any cracks or edges that might be vulnerable to high-pressure water.

After cleaning, applying an anti-slip treatment or grip additive to step surfaces is worth considering, particularly for steps in shaded positions where regrowth happens quickly. These treatments are added to the surface after cleaning and create a texture that provides grip even when the surface is wet or has some biological growth. They're particularly valuable for steps that are heavily used or in exposed positions.
