DIY vs Professional Pressure Washing: Which is Better?

Should you hire equipment and do it yourself, or call a professional? Here's an honest comparison.

DIY pressure washing is possible and many homeowners have adequate results with hired or purchased consumer-grade equipment. The advantages are obvious — you control the timing, there's no scheduling required, and you save the professional's labour cost. For small, simple jobs like rinsing down a small courtyard or cleaning a fence, DIY is often perfectly adequate.

However, professional results are consistently superior for larger or more complex jobs. Commercial-grade equipment operates at significantly higher pressure than consumer machines and uses far more water volume per minute, delivering faster and more thorough results. The rotary surface cleaner attachments used by professionals leave a perfectly even finish across flat surfaces that's very difficult to replicate with a hand-held lance.

Safety is a genuine concern with DIY. High-pressure water causes serious injuries if it contacts skin — it's far more powerful than it looks. Working at height with pressure washing equipment adds another layer of risk. Insurance is another consideration: if you damage a neighbour's property with DIY pressure washing, you may not be covered. For these reasons, jobs involving height, large areas, or complex surfaces are almost always better left to professionals.
