Should You Seal Your Driveway After Cleaning?

Sealing a driveway after cleaning can protect the surface and keep it cleaner for longer. Here's what you need to know.

Driveway sealing after a professional clean is one of the most effective ways to extend the life of the clean and protect the surface. A quality sealant penetrates the pores of the surface material, reducing water absorption and making it harder for moss, algae, and weeds to establish. It also makes the surface easier to maintain between professional cleans — dirt and staining sit on top of the sealant rather than penetrating the material.

The type of sealant depends on the surface. Block paving sealants are available in natural finish (which doesn't change the appearance) and wet look (which gives a glossy, slightly darker finish). Concrete sealants similarly range from invisible to lightly enhancing. Natural stone sealants should be penetrating and breathable to allow the stone to respond naturally to moisture changes without trapping water beneath the surface.

Timing is important. The surface must be completely dry before sealant is applied — applying to a damp surface traps moisture beneath and can cause discolouration or adhesion failure. Allow at least 24 hours after cleaning before sealing, longer in cool or humid weather. A freshly cleaned and sealed driveway can remain looking good for several years with simple maintenance, making the combined treatment excellent value.
