A Simple Annual Exterior Maintenance Plan for Homeowners

A regular maintenance schedule prevents costly repairs and keeps your home looking great year-round. Here's a practical plan.

Spring (March–May) is the time for a general exterior inspection and patio and driveway cleaning. After winter, moss and algae are at their peak and surfaces are most likely to be slippery and unsightly. A spring clean of hard surfaces, combined with checking external walls and roofing for winter damage, sets the property up well for the year ahead.

Autumn (October–November) is gutter and fascia season. Clear gutters after the main leaf fall, clean fascias and soffits if they're looking green, and check that all guttering is securely fixed ahead of winter rain. This two-visit annual pattern — spring surfaces, autumn gutters — covers the most important exterior cleaning tasks for most properties.

In between these scheduled visits, maintain surfaces with regular sweeping and prompt treatment of any new staining. Report any concerns — cracked gutters, loose fascia fixings, new damp patches — to the appropriate trades as soon as you notice them. Small problems are always cheaper to fix than large ones, and exterior maintenance is no exception.
