Moss Treatment Options: Chemical vs Mechanical Removal

There are different approaches to dealing with moss on driveways and patios. Here's how they compare.

Moss can be removed from hard surfaces by mechanical means — scrubbing or pressure washing — or by chemical treatment, or most effectively by combining both. Mechanical removal alone sweeps away the visible growth but leaves the root-like rhizoids attached to the surface, from which the moss rapidly regrows. Chemical treatment kills the roots, making subsequent removal easier and slowing regrowth considerably.

Biocidal treatments for moss come in various formulations. Some are applied as a spray and work over several weeks, causing the moss to brown and die before it's cleaned away. Others are applied as part of the cleaning process, working during the dwell time before the pressure wash. Post-clean biocidal treatments are applied after washing to inhibit regrowth rather than kill established growth.

For a one-time treatment approach, the most effective sequence is: apply biocide, allow sufficient dwell time for the moss to die, pressure wash to remove dead material, apply a final post-clean biocide or sealant. This approach kills the roots, removes all visible growth, and leaves the surface treated against regrowth. The result lasts significantly longer than either mechanical or chemical treatment alone.
