When Do Fascias and Soffits Need Cleaning?

Fascias and soffits give clear signs when they're due a clean. Here's what to look for on your next inspection.

Green streaks or a generally green tinge to your fascias and soffits is the most obvious sign that algae has taken hold. This is particularly common on north-facing or shaded elevations of the house. The green colouring is unmistakable and indicates that cleaning is overdue — the longer the algae is left, the harder it becomes to remove.

Brown or black staining below the gutters, running down the fascias, indicates that water is overflowing from blocked gutters and staining the fascia below. Cleaning the fascias in isolation won't solve the problem — the gutters need to be cleared first, then the fascias cleaned. This combination service is one we offer regularly.

For wooden fascias and soffits, look out for paint blistering, peeling, or bubbling. While this is often a sign of underlying moisture, cleaning the surface and allowing it to dry is the first step before any repainting. Cleaning reveals the true condition of the wood and helps you assess whether maintenance painting or replacement is needed.
