Gutters give clear warning signs when they're blocked. Here's what to look for — and why you shouldn't ignore them.
The most obvious sign of blocked gutters is water overflowing over the sides during heavy rain. If you notice water cascading over the edge of your gutters rather than flowing out of the downpipe, the gutter is blocked. This overflow damages fascias, walls, and the ground below, and will only get worse if left.
Visible plants or weeds growing in the gutters are a clear warning sign. This means the gutters have been blocked long enough for silt to accumulate and seeds to germinate and grow. At this stage the gutters need clearing urgently, as the weight of wet soil and plant matter can cause gutters to sag and pull away from the fascia.
Damp patches on interior walls or ceilings near the roofline can indicate that blocked gutters are allowing water to work its way into the building. This is a more serious warning sign that requires immediate attention. Don't ignore damp patches — the damage from prolonged water ingress can be extensive and expensive to repair.
