How to Prevent Weeds Returning After a Driveway Clean

A freshly cleaned driveway looks brilliant — here's how to keep weeds and moss from taking over again.

The first step in preventing weed return is thorough cleaning. Weeds and moss need to be completely removed — root systems and all — during the initial clean. Simply pressure washing the surface growth away without treating the roots means regrowth happens quickly. A professional clean with biocidal pre-treatment gives you a clean slate to work from.

Re-jointing block paving after cleaning is one of the most effective weed prevention measures. Weed seeds germinate in the gaps between blocks, so filling those gaps with kiln-dried jointing sand or a weed-resistant jointing compound significantly reduces the places weeds can establish. Some jointing products contain biocides that actively suppress weed germination for several seasons.

Post-clean sealing also helps. A quality driveway sealant reduces the porosity of the surface, limiting the areas where organic matter and seed can accumulate and germinate. It also makes the surface easier to clean when the time comes for future maintenance. Applying sealant after cleaning is an investment that pays back in reduced maintenance frequency over the following years.
