Why Regular Gutter Clearing Protects Your Home

Blocked gutters are one of the most common causes of preventable property damage. Here's why clearing them regularly is essential.

Gutters are designed to channel rainwater away from your home. When they become blocked, water overflows and runs down walls, pools at the base of the building, and saturates the soil around your foundations. Over time, this can cause serious damp problems internally, damage to external walls, and even foundation movement — all of which are extremely expensive to fix.

The damage doesn't stop at the walls. Overflowing water runs over fascias and soffits, accelerating rot in wooden components and staining uPVC. It can work its way under roof tiles, causing internal leaks. Water that pools against walls in winter can freeze, expanding and cracking masonry. All of this can be prevented by a simple annual gutter clear.

Insurance companies increasingly investigate whether blocked gutters contributed to a damp or water damage claim. If blocked gutters are found to be the cause, a claim may be partially or fully declined on the grounds of poor maintenance. Regular gutter clearing is not just good practice — it may be necessary to keep your home insurance valid.
