Autumn is the most important time of year for gutter maintenance. Here's why and when to have them cleared.
Autumn is the primary gutter clearing season for good reason. The bulk of leaf fall happens between October and December, and this leaf matter accumulates rapidly in gutters. Once wet leaves have compacted and decomposed, they form a dense blockage that water struggles to pass through. Clearing gutters in late November or December — after the main leaf fall — is the single most important gutter maintenance task of the year.
Don't wait until you see water overflowing. By the time gutters are visibly overflowing, they've likely been causing problems for some time. Water that can't drain through the gutters runs down walls, over fascias, and potentially into the building. Booking a gutter clear proactively in autumn, before heavy winter rain arrives, is far better than reacting to a problem after damage has occurred.
If you have trees overhanging or near your property, consider whether you need a spring clear as well. Trees shed more than just autumn leaves — they drop seed pods, helicopter seeds, and blossom in spring, all of which can contribute to gutter blockage. Properties with heavy tree coverage typically need two clears a year to stay on top of the build-up.
