Preparing Your Home's Exterior for Winter

A few hours of exterior maintenance in autumn can prevent expensive winter damage. Here's what to check and clean before the cold weather arrives.

Winter is harsh on home exteriors. Frost and freeze-thaw cycles damage surfaces, blocked gutters overflow and cause water damage, and damp conditions accelerate the growth of moss and algae. Taking action in autumn — before winter arrives — prevents much of this damage and ensures your home is in good condition going into the cold months.

Gutters are the top priority. Blocked gutters in winter overflow with every rainfall, and in freezing conditions, the standing water in blocked gutters can freeze and expand, cracking the gutter itself. Have gutters cleared in October or November, before the main leaf fall is complete. While you're arranging it, have downpipes checked and flushed as well.

Hard surfaces also benefit from pre-winter attention. Moss and algae on driveways and paths become particularly slippery in wet and frosty conditions. Cleaning in autumn removes this slip hazard and reduces the amount of growth that will need to be cleared the following spring. Clean driveways and paths are also easier to deal with during the snow-clearing and gritting that winter may require.
