Your patio takes a beating year-round. Here's how often different patio surfaces need cleaning and what affects the frequency.
Most patios need a professional clean every one to two years. However, patios that are heavily shaded, in areas with lots of overhanging trees, or in particularly damp climates will need more frequent attention. In the East Midlands, many patios are clean enough for two years if well maintained, but shaded or north-facing patios may need an annual clean.
Indian sandstone and natural stone patios can look dramatically different after cleaning — the colour brightens up noticeably. These surfaces are also more porous, meaning moss and algae take hold more readily, so they may need more regular attention than a porcelain or concrete slab patio. Applying a sealant after cleaning helps slow down the return of growth.
Between professional cleans, you can maintain your patio by brushing off leaf debris regularly and using a garden hose to rinse off light soiling after use. This won't replace professional cleaning but it will significantly extend the time between necessary deep cleans.
