How Often Should You Clear Your Gutters?

Blocked gutters cause serious, expensive damage. Here's how often to have them cleared and what happens if you don't.

The standard recommendation is to have gutters cleared at least once a year, ideally in late autumn after the bulk of leaves have fallen. If your property has overhanging trees — especially deciduous trees that drop a large volume of leaves — twice a year is better: once in spring to clear any winter build-up, and once in late autumn.

Gutters fill with more than just leaves. Moss, silt, bird droppings, and general roof debris all accumulate. In spring, seeds germinate in the silt and you can end up with weeds or even small plants growing in your gutters. This adds weight and can distort or crack the gutter, leading to costly repairs.

The consequences of blocked gutters are significant. Overflowing water damages fascias and soffits, can penetrate walls causing damp problems, and may even undermine foundations over time. A yearly gutter clear is a small investment compared to the cost of repairing water damage to your home. Think of it like servicing a car — regular maintenance prevents expensive breakdowns.
