Concrete is one of the most durable driveway materials, but it still needs regular cleaning to stay safe and attractive. Here's what's involved.
Concrete driveways can withstand higher cleaning pressures than most other surfaces, which means they can be cleaned quickly and effectively. Despite their durability, concrete driveways still accumulate moss, algae, oil stains, and general grime over time. A professional clean with a rotary surface cleaner removes all of this efficiently, leaving the concrete looking fresh and grey rather than green or brown.
The main challenge with concrete is dealing with ingrained staining. Oil and fuel stains, rust marks from metal furniture or gates, and biological staining from algae are all common. Each requires a different treatment: degreaser for oil, oxalic acid solution for rust, and biocidal treatment for biological growth. A good pressure washing company will use the appropriate product for each type of stain.
Concrete can be sealed after cleaning to reduce porosity and make future maintenance easier. Sealed concrete resists staining and algae growth much better than unsealed surfaces. It also enhances the appearance slightly, giving the surface a subtle sheen. For driveways that get heavy use or are in damp, shaded positions, sealing is a worthwhile investment.
