The Right Way to Clean a Tarmac Driveway

Tarmac driveways need a different approach to concrete or block paving. Here's how to clean tarmac safely and effectively.

Tarmac (asphalt) driveways are common on older properties and are relatively durable when maintained correctly. They require a gentler approach to cleaning than concrete — the aggregate within tarmac can be dislodged by excessive pressure, particularly on older or softer tarmac. A professional will test pressure on an inconspicuous area first to assess how much the surface can take.

Oil stains are a common problem on tarmac driveways, particularly near where vehicles are parked. A specialist degreaser is applied and worked in before pressure washing. This is far more effective than pressure washing alone, which tends to spread oil stains rather than lift them. Multiple treatments may be needed for very old or deep oil contamination.

After cleaning, tarmac sealant can be applied to seal the surface, protect against UV degradation, and give the driveway a refreshed black appearance. This is optional but worthwhile for driveways that have started to look faded or grey. Sealing also makes future cleaning easier by reducing the porosity of the surface.
