How to Clean a Resin Driveway Without Damaging It

Resin-bound driveways are low maintenance but not no maintenance. Here's the right way to keep a resin driveway clean and in good condition.

Resin-bound driveways consist of small aggregates bonded with a clear UV-stable resin to create a smooth, permeable surface. They're popular because they drain well, resist weed growth, and look attractive. However, they do accumulate algae and dirt over time, particularly in shaded areas, and require careful cleaning to avoid damaging the surface.

The key is to use relatively low pressure — high pressure can dislodge the aggregate from the resin binding if applied directly. A professional cleaner will use a wider-angle nozzle or rotary surface cleaner at reduced pressure to clean the surface evenly without affecting the aggregate. This requires experience and the right equipment settings; it's not a job for trial and error.

After cleaning, a light biocidal treatment can be applied to discourage algae regrowth. Resin driveways generally stay cleaner than block paving or concrete because the smooth surface gives moss and weeds less to take hold of. Annual rinsing and a professional clean every two to three years is usually sufficient to keep a resin driveway looking good.
