How to Clean Indian Sandstone Safely and Effectively

Indian sandstone is one of the UK's most popular patio materials. Here's how to clean it properly without causing damage.

Indian sandstone is a beautiful but relatively soft and porous natural stone. It requires a lower-pressure cleaning approach than harder surfaces like concrete or porcelain. Using too much pressure can damage the surface texture of the stone, causing it to look rough or pitted. A professional cleaner will use a surface cleaner at reduced pressure, combined with specialist natural stone cleaning products.

The most common problem with Indian sandstone is black spot — a form of dark mould that appears as small black dots or larger patches across the surface. Black spot is more resilient than regular algae and requires specific treatment to remove. A professional will use an appropriate treatment, allowing sufficient dwell time before cleaning. Multiple applications may be needed for heavy infestations.

After cleaning, applying a sealer specifically designed for Indian sandstone is strongly recommended. The sealer penetrates the pores of the stone, reducing water absorption and making the surface much easier to clean in future. It also enhances the natural colour of the stone. Re-sealing every two to three years, following a professional clean, keeps the patio in excellent condition.
