Caring for Your Porcelain Patio: Cleaning Guide

Porcelain is increasingly popular for patios — and for good reason. Here's how to keep your porcelain patio looking immaculate.

Porcelain is one of the easiest patio materials to maintain. Its extremely dense, non-porous surface resists staining and biological growth far better than natural stone or concrete. However, it's not completely maintenance-free — algae can still build up on the surface, particularly in damp or shaded areas, and the joints between slabs accumulate moss and weeds.

Cleaning porcelain requires care to avoid scratching the surface. Low-to-medium pressure is recommended, with a wide-angle nozzle or rotary surface cleaner. Strong acids or caustic cleaning agents should be avoided as they can damage the surface glaze. A neutral pH cleaner is appropriate for most cleaning tasks. Professional cleaners understand these requirements and will clean your porcelain patio without causing damage.

The joints between porcelain slabs are often the main area of concern. These are typically filled with a specialist jointing compound, which can be damaged by excessive pressure or harsh chemicals. Careful work around the joints, using appropriate pressure and products, keeps the jointing material intact while removing the growth that builds up around it.
