Oil stains are one of the toughest driveway cleaning challenges. Here's what actually works and when to call a professional.
Fresh oil stains are far easier to treat than old ones. If you notice an oil spill, absorb as much as possible with cat litter, sand, or an absorbent cloth, then apply a degreaser immediately. Leave it to work for the recommended time, then rinse thoroughly with water. Acting quickly prevents the oil from fully penetrating the surface, making it much easier to remove.
Old oil stains that have been soaking into a driveway for months or years require a more aggressive approach. Specialist industrial degreasers are applied and worked into the stain, then allowed to dwell before pressure washing. Multiple applications are often needed for deep, well-established stains. Even with professional treatment, very old stains may lighten rather than disappear completely — this should be managed as a realistic expectation.
The type of driveway surface affects how well oil stains can be removed. Concrete is the most difficult because of its porosity — oil penetrates deeply. Block paving allows individual heavily-stained blocks to be removed and replaced if necessary. Tarmac and resin surfaces are more resistant to deep penetration if treated promptly. Whatever your surface type, professional treatment will always achieve better results than DIY methods alone.
